Fresh off of a weekend getaway with two little people, I wanted to be sure to post this while memories were still fresh. We had a lovely getaway with friends, staying at an Airbnb about 5 hours away. For reference, we were gone 2 nights with our 4 & 7 year old. We each had our own bag (purse, camera bag, backpacks for the kids), packed way too many snacks, and threw everything else into a laundry basket. Yep – laundry basket – it will change your life.

If you are ready to start packing, feel free to use this link to download and print your getaway-ready packing list. If you’d like a few more insights to what we took, keep reading below.

On the packing list, you’ll find multiple items listed under things like “tops”, “bottoms”, and “shoes”. This is not to imply that you need each of those items, but to get you thinking about what you might want to take.

Your weekend getaway could look like a million different things, so I shot for “generic” and added lots of “maybes”. I try to pick outfits that can mix & match and work in layers (especially with kids when you never know about spills & accidents). All of our clothes go into our respective eBags packing cubes which then get tossed into our laundry basket and then the backseat.

We are “those people” who don’t do electronics for our kids, so road trips are times where we have lots of great conversations, listen to our favorite music (because my head needs a break from before-mentioned conversations), and I pack lots of travel friendly toys that feel like they are new because my kids only see them when we are on road trips. Preparing for a road trip for me means making sure their backpacks are full of books, coloring supplies, and toys that don’t get lost in the cracks of their seats.

On this particular trip, we went light on camera gear and kept it to our mobile phone + and our Osmo +. You can check out these links to see what went in to our camera bag.

This is a tried and true packing list for our family. It may not be an exhaustive list for yours. Be sure to add / revise your own list as needed and let us know if there are any major items that we are missing out on.

  1. Laundry baskets are the best for putting everything in! I make a list every time we go away for a weekend/week…I will totally be using this one from now on!
