You’re reading this post because you want to take your video footage to the next level. Chances are, you probably don’t put a ton of thought into your video footage. You simply whip out your phone, hit record, and then stop again once you’ve got the shot. Here are a few things to keep in mind the next time you capture footage in order to up your videography game!

Change Your Vantage Point – Don’t just stand there and point and shoot. Mix things up a bit. Try getting a low angle shot for a different perspective, or a high angle shot looking down from above (this one isn’t always an option). When you change your angle from normal head height, the viewer is automatically drawn in, because they are seeing things from a different perspective.

Add Movement – Stagnant shots have their place. But if that’s all you ever do, don’t be afraid to add a bit of movement to your footage. Try rotating your body as you hold your camera to show a space, or following someone who is walking. Movement will give your shot a more dynamic feel and make the viewer feel like they are part of the scene.

Be a Smooth Operator – Unless you’re working on a Jason Bourne movie, try to keep your footage as smooth as possible. Cameras like the GoPro Hero 7, Osmo Pocket, and Insta 360 One X are getting better and better at smoothing out footage, but even iPhones with built in image stabilization don’t always get rid of all of the shaky footage. Do your absolute best at keeping your footage as smooth and silky as possible for enjoyable viewing later. (Be sure to also read 4 Easy Tips to Smoother Footage.)
